Why this exists

Thousands of NYC nonprofits need volunteers, but their positions go unfilled — not because people don’t care, but because they never see them. Opportunities are buried across fragmented websites, posted with no consideration for who’s actually looking. The desire to help is there. The connection isn’t.

ServiceWeekly bridges that gap — one place where NYC students and the organizations that need them actually find each other.

Questions

Is this actually free?

Yes — completely. Students pay nothing, and charities pay nothing to list opportunities or use the applicant dashboard. We may eventually add a paid option for schools or organizations that want premium placement or analytics, but everything students use will always be free.

How do I know the hours will count?

Every opportunity is tagged for whether it counts toward the major service standards: the NYC DOE Chancellor’s 100-hour Service Endorsement, the National Honor Society requirement, and most college applications. Requirements vary slightly between schools, so the safest move is to confirm with your counselor or service coordinator before you start. As a general rule, structured volunteering with a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides a documented sign-in or completion letter will qualify almost everywhere. Your ServiceWeekly hour log gives you a clean record to show them.

What if I’m not in NYC?

Right now ServiceWeekly is NYC-only. We only curate opportunities we can personally vouch for, which means staying close to home for the moment. If you would like the same thing for your city, reply to any email drop with the city name and we will add you to that waitlist. Once a single city reaches 50 waitlisters, we begin building it out.

How do you pick the opportunities?

Listings come from 8+ NYC volunteer sources — NYC Service, New York Cares, TeenLife, Volunteer New York — plus direct submissions from charities. We filter for opportunities that are actively open to teenagers, transit-accessible, and complete enough that you can sign up without needing an introduction. Every listing is reviewed by a human before it appears on the site or in the email.

What data do you collect about students?

Only what the features need: your email and password (stored securely hashed) if you create an account, plus whatever you choose to add — name, school, grade, saved opportunities, logged hours, applications, and reviews. Organizations you apply to see your first name, school, and grade — never your email or contact details; all messaging stays on the platform. We never sell or share personal information, and we don’t run ads or third-party trackers. The full details are in our Privacy Policy, and you can ask us to delete your data at any time.

Can I unsubscribe or delete my account?

Yes — one click unsubscribes you from the email, from the footer of any drop. For accounts, email us or reply to any drop and we will delete your account and personal information promptly. No exit interview, no win-back emails.
